The second basic sewing course in Macherio is underway!

At the end of May, a new training journey began, accompanying women as they discover the world of sewing through hands-on learning, sharing, and new opportunities...

Between a new beginning and new challenges…

Following the completion of the advanced course and the diploma ceremony for the participants of the first training cycle, a new basic sewing course has begun in Macherio as part of the Insieme per ricucire legami di comunità project, in collaboration with the cooperative La Grande Casa and with the support of Fondazione Cariplo and Fondazione della Comunità Monza Brianza.

The new course follows the first training cycle, which began in May 2025 and came to an end at the end of April 2026. Now, new women have joined the group, and we have started again with new challenges. Guided by Ilaria, a teacher at Spazio 3R, and Anastasia, a tutor from La Grande Casa, the participants will learn how to use both domestic and industrial sewing machines, an overlocker, the main hand-sewing techniques, and the basics of pattern making.

The course also includes the creation of several garments, such as a basic skirt and a kimono-sleeve blouse, as well as learning garment repair techniques. As Ilaria explains, the course aims to be “a stepping stone for taking those first steps into the world of sewing with confidence.”

A growing group and new opportunities…

The course brings together seven women, both Italian and Peruvian. Three are continuing the journey they began in the past few months, while four are new participants.

“I’m hoping to learn how to use the sewing machines, make patterns, and place pins properly — something I didn’t realize was so important,” says Adele. “I’m really enjoying working with reclaimed fabrics and giving them new life through creativity.”

The project is also continuing to create new opportunities. Two women who took part in previous courses now attend the weekly coworking sessions: mornings when they can put their sewing skills into practice and experiment with new techniques, either continuing with their own projects or creating something new.

“I feel like I’m learning so much, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s the first time I’ve had the chance to experience working in a sewing workshop,” says Maria.

Finally, one of the participants will begin an internship in July at the Spazio 3R workshop on Via Ascanio Sforza in Milan.

Beyond the technical skills, the course also stands out for the atmosphere in the workshop.

“The group is characterized by a warm, peaceful, and close-knit atmosphere,” says Ilaria.

It is an environment that encourages collaboration, mutual trust, and the building of meaningful relationships. These are essential ingredients not only for learning a profession, but also for bringing projects to life and developing new ideas. In this way, the workshop becomes a space for renewal and rediscovery — a place where learning and dialogue can open the door to something new.
