Over the past few months, Edelfa has been with us in the workshop. She’s 18, quiet and reserved, and currently in her fourth and final year at CFP Paullo (AFOL Metropolitana). Alongside drawing, she is also passionate about volleyball, a sport that, in her view, shares many values with tailoring.

An Internship that Shapes Her Future

“I chose a fashion program because I wanted to learn how to make my own clothes. Before this, I didn’t really know how to sew at all,” Edelfa tells us. After completing internships in other workshops, including a handbag company and a formalwear studio, her school suggested she try working in a tailoring workshop like Spazio 3R. “ I learned how to use the embroidery machine, how to thread the overlock machine, and how to make beauty and tote bags. This program has given me a lot of inspiration and ideas I can replicate in the future."

A Welcoming Environment and Learning Digital Tools

After three months alongside Spazio 3R’s seamstresses, Edelfa says she felt at home, discovering an environment different from what she expected. “I thought the atmosphere would be much more serious, but the people who work here are very welcoming.” She particularly looks back on the end-of-year lunch before Christmas break as a special moment, remembering it as “very friendly with lots of people.”

Edelf had the chance to experience digital tools in tailoring and learned how to use the digital embroidery machine. “It was easy to learn how to use it,” Edelfa described, “but you have to be careful that the fabric is stretched properly and that no folds form under the needle.” She would like to deepen this skill, as it allows the work to be both more personal and timely.

Collaboration and Dreams for Future

Alongside her passion for drawing, specifically fashion design, Edelfa is also a volleyball player, where she plays as an outside hitter. We asked her whether she sees shared values between tailoring and volleyball and she replied, “Just like in volleyball, in tailoring it’s essential that everyone plays their role and puts in effort,” adding that, “if someone receives the ball poorly, it becomes difficult for the setter to keep the play going. The same goes for tailoring. For example, when we were making beauty bags, we had to attach the zippers properly, or it became more complicated for Halima to sew the side seams.”

Looking to the future, beyond winning the championship with her volleyball team, Edelfa hopes to further specialize in design, especially bags and footwear, and eventually start her own brand.

We’re happy that Edelfa has shared part of her journey with us, and we wish her every success in making her dreams come true!
